The Smell of Rain

the smell of rain

about

With this short film I chose to use a couple of organizing principles over a narrative, those being sound and color. I wanted to combine skills I had learned in my Design classes with my knowledge of film. I was particularly inspired by the short film, Mothlight, and wanted to make a similar film which had imagery flashing frame by frame to create a viewing experience. While I knew I did not have the time for something as elaborate as those individually composed frames, I knew I could use color in a similar way. I ended up using the same song from another project, but framed it in an entirely new way; while this song worked well as background for my studio project, independently it had a life of its own. I chose to focus on the sensation of rain falling which seemed to fit well with the rise and fall of the melody. Continuing with the theme of rain falling, I overlaid my color on a montage of rainstorm images to create more visual interest and framed the image to feel more like a window. While rain is often seen as dark and gloomy, I hoped to highlight the natural rhythm rain has, which is much more lively than the image we usually see out our window.
